8/17/2023 0 Comments Team fortress 2 pyro update![]() As with the Medic, however, servers have already popped up as dedicated places for players to grind out the achievements, so if you're hell-bent on getting that Axtinguisher before that LAN party this Saturday, it's not completely out of your grasp.Īlso included with this patch are two new community-created maps: "Fastlane" and "Turbine." The first, "Fastlane" is a control-point map, in the style of "Granary," "Well" or "Badlands," where teams battle back and forth to control a chain of five points. In fact, unlike the Medic pack, which had a few gimmes like "charge an Uber during setup" or "heal an engineer repairing a sentry gun," there aren't too many automatic achievements in the Pyro pack. In general, this new batch of achievements seems a little more accessible than the Medic's, but are by no means easy. We've seen a lot of heavy action on Fastlane, but stalemates have been common. Which means that right now, with Pyros running amok, is probably the best time to use it, if you can rack up 22 (well, 20) achievements quickly enough. This replaces the basic fire axe, and while it's actually weaker against most enemies, it guarantees crits against anyone on fire. The final new weapon probably won't get as much general-purpose use, but still looks pretty fun: the Axtinguisher. We've already seen quite a few Pyros running around with this weapon, and it makes them pretty dangerous if you're a slower-moving class, especially the Heavy. However, not only does the Backburner guarantee critical hits when used from behind, but it also gives the Pyro an additional 50 health. This replaces the Pyro's main flamethrower weapon, with only one drawback: you lose the alt-fire pushback ability. The second new Pyro weapon is the appropriately-named Backburner, acquired after completing 16 achievements (well, really 15, since the "Milestone 1" for getting the Flare Gun is counted). ![]() It's pretty handy on maps where enemies might bunch up in one place, like on a control point or on the cart on Gold Rush. Think of it as a rocket that doesn't explode on impact, but instead ignites anyone it hits. The Flare Gun replaces your shotgun, firing a projectile that can set enemies on fire from afar. The first Pyro unlockable is the Flare Gun, which you receive after completing 10 achievements. If you can see the Backburner this close, you're probably on fire. It's not easy, but for a Soldier, it's pretty disorienting the first time you're locked in a one-on-one with a Pyro and a rocket comes flying at your head. Not only can he use this to push players or objects around (no longer does the Pyro have to fear a cluster of Demoman sticky bombs blocking his path), he can even redirect rockets back at Soldiers. There may be an adjustment period for Soldiers, however, as the Pyro has been given the ability to shoot out a blast of compressed air using his main weapon's alt-fire. Since the Heavy class can chew up Pyros in a heartbeat, they've become a bit more valuable than before, but need to watch their backs: several of the new Pyro weapons do extra damage from behind, which can mean big trouble if one sneaks behind a Heavy. Which makes it an awesome time to play a Heavy, and a lousy time to be a Spy. In case you're in that category, or simply haven't played TF2 in a while, we put on our flame-retardant suits and hit the servers this morning to help give you some idea what to expect.Īs expected, the introduction of achievements and new weapons has created a massive surge in the general Pyro population it's not uncommon to see teams with four to six Pyros each. To coincide with the release, Valve kicked off a TF2 "free weekend" this morning, during which anyone who hasn't already bought TF2 can download and play it for free via Valve's Steam service. The Pyro update includes 35 new achievements, which in turn unlock three special weapons - the Flare Gun, the Backburner, and the Axtinguisher - as well as two new community-created maps. Late Thursday afternoon, Valve Software released the second in the series of ongoing class updates for the popular Team Fortress 2.
